Jesus Took a Nap
One day Jesus said to his disciples,Β βLetβs cross to the other side of the lake.βΒ So they got into a boat and started out.Β As they sailed across, Jesus settled down for a nap. But soon a fierce storm came down on the lake. The boat was filling with water, and they were in real danger.Β Β Luke 8:22-23
Nap. When you hear that word what do you think of? Maybe you would like to take a nap right now. Maybe you would just love for your kids to take a nap so you can get some quiet time. Or maybe you think to yourself βNap? Who needs that?β or βWho has time for that?β
In todayβs reading, we are jumping into the boat with Jesus and His disciples to cross to the other side of the lake. And guess what Jesus does? He takes a nap. The disciples are about to experience the boat ride of their lives and learn about Jesus in a new way. They learn that Jesus responds, rebukes and invites us deeper.
Jesus Responds
First, Jesus responds in the storm. The disciples were in real danger. The boat was filling with water! So they turned to the One who could help them. What did Jesus do? He responded right away. Jesus woke up and stepped into the storm.
Jesus rebukes
Secondly, Jesus rebuked the wind and raging waves. Do you notice what happened after He did that? Instantly the storm stopped and the sea was calm. It didnβt take an hour or even a few minutes to calm down. The storm stopped instantly because Jesus spoke. Next, Jesus spoke to His disciples.
Jesus invited
Jesus invited His disciples with the question βWhere is your faith?β In this question, Jesus challenges His disciples about their fear. Jesus wants them to recognize that with Him they need not fear anything. Jesus invited His disciples to learn to trust Him more.
What storm do you find yourself facing right now? Do you turn to Jesus right away or try to figure it out on your own? Jesus wants to respond to your storm also. Will you ask Jesus to help you and rebuke the storm of your life? Remember, even the wind and the waves obey Him. Jesus is inviting you to go deeper in your faith. To get rid of fear and learn to trust Him more. How will you respond to Jesus today?
Heavenly Father, I want to grow in my faith and trust You more. Help me to not let fear overtake when the storm is swirling around me. Thank You for always being with me. I am thankful that You are in control of all things. I love You Lord. In Jesus’ name, Amen.Β
