7 Questions to Reflect on 2020 + {A FREE printable}

It’s hard to believe that this year is almost over. I don’t know about you, but 2020 was a really different year. It went really slow but also at points really fast. Next week, the year 2021 begins. Before you jump into the new year, I encourage you to take some time to reflect on 2020.  In today’s post, I share seven questions to reflect on the year and my answers to each.

At the end of the post is a FREE printable of these seven questions for you to use. When you take time to reflect on your year, it is a way to slow down and remember all that happened this year. The good and the bad and how it shaped you into the person you are today. As you look back, you are also able to see the ways God has been working in your life.

What are three words you would use to describe this year and why?

The three words I would use to describe my year are loved, flexible, and trust. This year I came to a new realization of how fully known and deeply loved I am by God. I have always known this in my head but it traveled deeper into my heart this year. It’s so amazing to me how much God loves me just the way I am.

Flexible is another word that I would use to describe this year. With all the changes that have been going on with the Coronavirus, I had to be very flexible. The schedule changed constantly and it was hard to know what was going to happen next. But, having a flexible attitude definitely cut down on the frustration.

Trust is also a word I would use to describe this year especially because it was my word of the year for 2020. There have been so many experiences this year where I have had to learn to trust God more fully. It’s been amazing to grow in this way even though it has been hard.

7 Questions to Reflect

What new things did you discover about yourself?

Something new I learned this year is I am capable of a lot more than I realized. Too often in my life, I feel like I didn’t have what it takes or I am not good enough. This comes from old thought patterns that God continues to uproot. As I look back on this year, God showed me that I do have what it takes because I am living in His strength. For example, I would now call myself a scheduling ninja. I can’t even remember how many times I had to change up my schedule as things constantly changed. But, the Holy Spirit gave me wisdom every single time.

During this last year, what characteristic of God did He use to encourage you the most?

His Faithfulness. God is always there for me no matter what. He provides the wisdom and strength I need every day. God is ready to fill me up with whatever else I need for the day. I can always count on God. Even when situations don’t make sense, I choose to remember how God has been faithful to pull me through and He will do it again.

What Bible verse impacted you most this year and why?

The Bible verse that impacted me the most this year was Joshua 1:9 which reads This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” There were many times this year I felt discouraged. The Holy Spirit convicted me using this Scripture verse. God commands us to not be afraid or discouraged. So, why was I walking around this way? What I love is how God also reminds us in this Scripture verse that He is with us wherever we go. That is how we choose to not be afraid or discouraged. God is in control. We can trust Him!

What was your favorite moment spent with your family and/or friends?

My favorite moment spent with my family this year was getting our first dog and our trip to Ohio to see family. The kids loved swimming in Aunt Clare’s pool and we had some great connect time. I also loved watching Micaela do cross country for the first time and Nathan play football and basketball. My favorite moment with Jonathan was a trip to Pokagon State Park on our 20th anniversary. I rode a horse for the first time. The setting was gorgeous and relaxing.  It was a great day to get away and celebrate. We also enjoyed some yummy food.

My favorite moment spent with my friends this year was my Birthday dinner. My friend Megan coordinated a dinner out at Texas Road House. Several friends joined even with their busy schedules. I felt so loved and celebrated. God has blessed me with some amazing friends! I also loved the day trip to Michigan with friends to celebrate my friend Kristi. We went to a beautiful garden and enjoyed some great connect time.

What was the most important lesson you learned this year?

The most important lesson I learned this year was that I need to fix my thoughts on God.  In Phillippians 4:8 we read And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. “

There were many times throughout this year that my mind was not camping on good things. I had a lot of doubts, fears, worries, etc. As a believer in Christ, I need to daily fix my thoughts on what is true, honorable, etc. This verse anchored me and reminded me to think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.

What is one thing you would do differently and why?

One thing I would do differently is to focus on the good. It’s too easy to see all the things that are going wrong, especially this year. But, there is so much more to life. As believers in Christ, we have a perfect heavenly home waiting for us. We have hope that one day all things will be made new. I know how this story ends. That is what I need to focus on. It goes back to what I shared in the previous question and my need to fix my thoughts on God.
