I Wish I Was Like Her…3 Steps to Combat Comparison
Think of the last time you scrolled through your Facebook or Instagram feed. Whose update made you feel like you arenβt enough? Or which post made you feel jealous because you wished for what she had? All too often, we think to ourselves βI wish I was like her.βΒ Comparison. It is the thief of joy.
Β
We think and sometimes say out loud "I wish I was as skinny as my sister" or "Oh, I love her outfit, I wish I could have clothes like that."Β Maybe you have thought "I wish I had her body shape" or "I wish I could sing or dance like her."Β We even wish we had a life like her because then things would be all better.
"Comparison is the thief of joy."Β Theodore RooseveltΒ
Comparison is not healthy but yet we find ourselves doing it almost daily.Β So, what do we do to combat it? Here is a 3 step plan I go through when I start to compare myself to others.Β
Step away from the situation
When you find yourself comparing, the first step is to move away from the situation. Close your Facebook or Instagram app. Put down your phone. Or close out of the internet on your computer. If you are out with friends and start comparing, step away from them by going to the bathroom or moving somewhere else.Β
Forgiveness
The second step is to ask God to forgive you for comparing. Comparison is a sin. It is telling God βI donβt like how you made me.βΒ Instead, thank God for making you the way that you are. Ask God to help you to continue to walk in who He made you to be.
Read Godβs Truth out loud
The third step when you find yourself comparing is to read Psalm 139:14 and Zephaniah 3:17 out loud three times. When you read the Scriptures out loud, it helps to focus your mind on Godβs truth instead of the lies of the enemy.
Psalm 139:14
βI praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.βΒ ββPsalmβ¬ β139:14β¬, βNIVβ¬β¬
Reading Psalm 139:14 helps remind yourself of who God created you to be. He made you the way you are on purpose and loves you just as you are. God wants you to see how fearfully and wonderfully made you truly are.
Zephaniah 3:17
βThe Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love, he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.β Β ββZephaniahβ¬ β3:17,β¬ βNIVβ¬β¬
Zephaniah 3:17 reminds you that God delights in and sings over you. If the Creator of the Universe delights in and sings over you, you are pretty special. He has an incredible plan for your life and will take care of all your needs.Β
Walk in Truth
Friends, when we rest in full assurance of Godβs promises and believe it with all our hearts then we can walk in His truth. We don't have to compare ourselves to others.Β We don't have to focus on what we think we need. We can instead focus on God's love for us. We can be so filled up with Godβs love that it will just ooze out on others.Β Β
So, the next time you find yourself comparing, I encourage you to step away from the situation, ask for forgiveness, and speak Godβs truth out loud. Which one of these steps will you do today?
Thank you so much for this wise and powerful reminder. My heart needed this today!
You are most welcome! Love how God knows exactly what we need.
