What do you want me to do for you?

“Jesus stopped and called them. “What do you want me to do for you?” he asked.  “Lord,” they answered, “we want our sight.” Jesus had compassion on them and touched their eyes. Immediately they received their sight and followed him.”

Matthew 20:32-34

When is the last time you really, really wanted something? I mean REALLY wanted something. You spent time dreaming about where it would go in your home or how great you would look in that new outfit. Or maybe you spent time imagining what it would be like to finally have someone in your life. Whatever it may be, we have all really wanted something in our life.

Here’s a story from Mathew 20:29-31 about two men who really wanted something. “As Jesus and his disciples were leaving Jericho, a large crowd followed him. Two blind men were sitting by the roadside, and when they heard that Jesus was going by, they shouted, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!” The crowd rebuked them and told them to be quiet, but they shouted all the louder, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!”

As I read this account, I was challenged to look at where I go when I really want something. These two men taught me a few things. I learned that I need to ask, surround, and trust.

Ask

First, don’t stop asking. These men sat by the roadside and heard Jesus was going by. Can you imagine how fast their hearts were beating? They had heard about this man named Jesus and they knew He could help them. So, they shouted out to Jesus. People all around them told them to be quiet. But instead of letting that stop them, they shouted all the louder. They got Jesus’ attention.

Surround

Second, surround yourself with people who will encourage you to depend on God. The crowd rebuked these men for shouting at Jesus. What they needed in that moment was a friend to stop Jesus and point them out. They needed friends who were willing to do anything to help them get to Jesus. Do you have friends like that? We need to surround ourselves with people who point us to Jesus.

Trust

And finally, these men taught me to ask Jesus first and trust that He will provide. In Matthew 20:32-24, we see how bold these men were-  “Jesus stopped and called them. “What do you want me to do for you?” he asked.  “Lord,” they answered, “we want our sight.” Jesus had compassion on them and touched their eyes. Immediately they received their sight and followed him.”

Too often I find myself asking others for help first instead of depending on the only One who can provide for all my needs. These men were very bold to yell out to Jesus. They did it because they knew He could heal them. I want that kind of faith, don’t you? I love how Jesus blessed them because they chose to trust Him.

Jesus is asking you today “What do you want me to do for you?” Will you respond with what is on your heart? And then will you choose to trust Him?

Heavenly Father, I want to be like these men. I want to turn to You first. Please help me to do that. Thank You that You care so deeply for every one of my needs. Thank You that You want to provide. Please teach me to trust You more. In Jesus name, Amen.

Trust
