10 Ways to Stay in Love with God’s Word
Last month, I had the privilege of being a part of the Fall in Love with God’s Word challenge. As it came to a close, I thought about all the amazing ladies who had been digging into God’s word. I know life is busy for them all and I assuming for you too. Even in the busy, I want to encourage us all to stay in love with God’s word. To keep digging deep and spending time reading the Bible. Here are ten ways to stay in love with God’s word.
1. Read the Bible like a love letter
The Bible is God’s love letter to you. What exactly does that mean? God inspired the books of the Bible to reach your heart and share about His love for you. He filled His word with His character traits so you can see that He is faithful and trustworthy.
God also filled the bible with promises to stand on. He desires a deep and loving relationship with you. And because of that, God wrote a love letter to you to express His love. When we read it in that way, our perspective changes. In fact, the excitement to read the Bible increases. What will God speak to us about today?
2. Pray and ask the Holy Spirit to teach you as you read
As you sit down to read the Bible, pause before starting and pray. Ask the Holy Spirit to open your eyes to God’s truth. Also ask for wisdom to understand what you read. The Holy Spirit loves to reveal truth so you can be confident He will answer this prayer. As you spend more time seeking the Lord in prayer, you will love the Bible more.
3. Write in the margins of your Bible
The Bible is a book that is meant to be marked up. When a scripture verse impacts you, write about it in the margin. What impacted you about it? Write that in the margin and then date it. It is always fun to look back on what you have learned.
4. Schedule a time to read the Bible each day
Think about what you do when you want to spend time with your husband or friends. You schedule a time to get together. Do the same thing with your Bible and time with God.
Schedule a time to read the Bible each day. This could be the same time every day or change each day. Do whatever works best with your schedule and season of life. The key is taking the time each day to read the Bible.
5. Read the Bible in a different translation
Everyone once in a while pick a different translation of the Bible to read. Often different translations bring out different thoughts than the usual translation you read. Different translations of the Bible also word scripture verses in a way that is more understandable.
Consider owning a bible with a different version. My favorite translation is the NLT (New Living Translation). I also love and own a NIV (New International Version) Bible. If you don’t want to get another Bible, use an online option. Some ideas are Biblegateway.com or Blueletterbible.org.
6. If you miss a day of reading the Bible, forgive yourself
Life is busy. Especially this time of year. There are going to be days you miss reading the Bible. When you do (because it will happen), extend yourself some grace. Don’t beat yourself up over it and forgive yourself. Jump back in the next day and enjoy reading!
7. Use a Bible app
There are so many wait times in our day. At the red light, waiting on a train, or in a school pick up line. Use the time to read the Bible on the go.
There are lots of Bible apps out there. My favorite is YouVersion. Others include Bible Gateway and Blue Letter Bible. Type the word ‘Bible’ into the search engine in your app Store to see what you can find. Start reading the Bible on the go today!
8. Do a Bible study with a group or an Online Study
Gather a group of friends or join a Bible Study at church. There is something so powerful about gathering with other people to study the Bible together.
Another option is doing an Online Bible Study. It’s a great way to connect with others from around the country and world. I enjoy doing the Proverbs 31 Online Bible Studies. In fact, I am working through the Breathe study right now.
9. Use Bible highlighters or Colored Pens
Another way to stay in love with God’s Word is by using Bible highlighters or Colored pens. I love using these erasable pens to underline the Scripture verses that jump out at me. I have also used these bible highlighters.
Mark up your Bible, add notes, and date it. I love being able to look back on what I underlined to see remember all that God has taught me.
10. Write scripture verses on index cards or post it notes
As you read the Bible, scripture verses will challenge, encourage and convict you. A great way to remember these verses is to write these scripture verses on index cards or post it notes. Place these verses around the house, on your bathroom mirror, or on the steering wheel of your vehicle. There are so many options of places to post God’s Word.
The Bible is alive and active. Let’s take time each day to dig into God’s word. Even in the busy, I want to encourage us all to stay in love with God’s word.
