How to Build Character in Your Children
As a parent, I am constantly thinking about how I can help build character in our children. I desire that my kids will reflect Jesus and be a light to the world. This past year, I found a resource that has been so helpful in this journey. It’s a book called In This House We Will Giggle by Courtney DeFeo. The subtitle of the book is “Making Virtues, Love & Laughter a Daily Part of Your Family Life.”
We worked through several of the virtues this year though not all. Jonathan and I decided at our Family Goal Retreat this past weekend that we are going to use In This House We Will Giggle again in 2017.
In the introduction of the book, there is with a section with the title “The Toughest Job We’ll Ever Love.” This quote really stood out to me from this section: “My husband and I have made it our pursuit to create a home … where grace and love flow. A home where kids see Christ’s love in action. A home where giggles-not screams- erupt through the windows.” After reading this, I felt encouraged and excited to have this incredible resource to help our home be a place where grace, love and laughter flow.
12 Virtues
The book is divided into 12 virtues. Each virtue has a memory verse, definition of the virtue, questions for discussion, and activities related to the virtue. It is packed with lots of great information! I love that you can use any or all of the information to help teach the virtue. It is very customizable to your own family.
Our kids have responded well to each of the virtues we have taught them. We created a Family Board by our kitchen table to display the virtue of the month.
As often as we remember, we ask the kids the definition of the virtue and/or the memory verse. My husband and I will also recite either one. We also have used several of the activities in the book on our family fun nights. I am looking forward to applying more of In This House We Will Giggle this coming year.
Would you like to build character in your children? Would you like your home to reflect love, laughter, and grace? I encourage you to check this resource out!
