Choose a Word of the Year in 5 Simple Steps

If you haven’t picked a Word of the Year for 2023 yet, no worries! There is still time to pick your word in 5 simple steps.

I first learned about the Word of the Year concept several years ago. Several of my friends had one and I wanted to know what the hype was. I learned that a Word of the Year gives you a growth focus for the year.

The word is meant to represent a central way you are depending on God in the year to come. It helps you determine who you want to become by the end of the year.

When you have a word of the year, it helps you to be intentional about how you spend the hours, days, and months of the year. You can pick your Word of the Year in 5 simple steps.

1. Reflection

The first step is to take some time to reflect on your last year. What has been happening in your life and how is God using it for your good? Think about who you want to become by the end of this year. What character quality do you need more of in this coming year?

2. Brainstorm

Next, brainstorm a list of at least ten words you can think of. Here is a list of Word of the Year ideas help you.

3. Pray

The third step is to take some time to pray as you read this brainstorm list. Ask God to give you wisdom. He knows more than anyone who you can become by the end of the year.

4. Choose your Top 3 words

Next, pull out the top three words from your list. Look up the definition of each of these three words. Which word hits a growth point the most? Again, pray and ask God for wisdom.

5. Choose Your Word of the Year

Choose one word from the list of three. Congratulations! You picked your Word of the Year. Next, spend time finding a Scripture verse that goes along with it. Make sure you understand the context of the Scripture verse. I use the study notes in my Bible or look on Bibleagateway.com. I encourage you to memorize this Scripture verse by the end of the year.
