Choose Your Word of the Year…then Get Your Gear!
There is power in one word. Several of my friends have shared with me their Word of the Year before I even knew what a word of the year was. A couple of years ago, I decided to look into it. In today’s post, I share the why, how and my word of the year.
The Why
The purpose of choosing a Word of the Year is to give you a growth focus for the new year. The word is meant to represent a central way you are depending on God in the year to come. It helps you determine who you want to become by the end of the year. So, how do you choose your word of the year?
The How
First, spend time praying. Ask God to give you wisdom. Think about who you want to become by the end of the year. What character quality do you need more of? How do you want to be different by the end of December? Next, make a brainstorm list of all the words you can think of. Here are a few ideas to get you going.
Pull out the top three from your word list and spend more time praying over those words. Please remember to ask God for wisdom. He knows more than anyone who you can become by the end of the year.
After you have decided on a word, look up the definition to understand your word more. Next, spend time finding a scripture verse that goes along with it. I encourage you to memorize this scripture by the end of the year.

My Word of the Year
My Word of the Year for 2019 is Pause. God placed this word on my heart towards the end of last year. Often my response or reaction to our children and my husband can be critical or negative. My reaction can also be this way when facing conflict or difficult situation.
My desire is to live out Proverbs 31:26 which reads “When she speaks, her words are wise, and she gives instructions with kindness.” Instead of reacting quickly, I want to Pause before I speak and also before I react in my thoughts.
The growth throughout the year will be exciting to see. I know it will be challenging to break patterns. I am so thankful I am not alone in this! In fact, my scripture verse that goes with my Word of the Year is Psalm 46:7, which reads “The Lord of Heaven’s Armies is here among us; the God of Israel is our fortress.” Selah
Selah is a Hebrew word that means pause. Isn’t that just awesome?!?! It is used 71 times in the Bible. Selah has taken on a whole new meaning for me as I focus on Pause. My scripture verse reminds me that the Lord of Heaven’s Armies is on my side. He can help me keep my mouth closed before unkind words slip out. God can help me to pause, check my thoughts, attitude and body language also.
