My 2025 Word of the Year

Have you chosen your Word of the Year for 2025 yet? If not, don’t worry—there’s still time to choose one!

I first discovered the concept of a Word of the Year in 2018 after hearing a few friends talk about theirs. My friend’s enthusiasm sparked my curiosity and what I found was more than just a trendy idea. A word of the year became a meaningful way to approach each year with purpose.

Choosing a Word of the Year isn’t just about setting goals; it’s about focusing on how you’re trusting God to work in your life during the new year. A Word of the Year is a theme that helps you grow intentionally and align with your God-given purpose over the next twelve months.

Word of the Year

The word God put on my heart for 2025 is rooted. This word often brings to mind a large, flourishing tree with healthy roots. The tree is flourishing because it is rooted in good soil.

The roots of a tree are its lifeline. They draw in the water and nutrients it needs to grow strong. The roots help the tree to stand firm especially when the winds of a storm try to topple it.

In the same way, being rooted in God’s Word provides the nourishment I need to thrive. But being rooted doesn’t happen by accident. It’s an intentional choice to prioritize time with God daily.

This year, this is what I’m asking myself: Who or what am I rooted in? Am I allowing God’s Word to shape my thoughts, decisions, and actions? Or am I letting the distractions and lies of the world take root instead? I am excited to see how God uses my word of the year.

Rooted

The Scripture Verse that goes along with my word of the year is Colossians 2:7, NLT:

Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.”

This verse challenges me to stay rooted in Jesus. I want my life to be built on God and His word. I desire to be so deeply rooted in God’s Word that I will be able to instantly discern and remove any lies.

What does the word rooted mean?

Each time I pick out a word of the year, I look up the definition in the dictionary to understand what my word means. The Cambridge Dictionary defines rooted as: “very strong and firmly fixed”  Another definition of rooted is unwavering. When someone is deeply rooted in God, they are anchored to His Word. No matter what circumstances they face in life, they will remain steadfast in the truth of His promises.

This year, I am looking forward to being more rooted in God. I am excited to fill my mind with His word.
