Sitting at the Feet of Jesus: Finding Stillness in a Busy World
Her sister, Mary, sat at the Lord’s feet, listening to what he taught.” Luke 10:39
Think about the last time you sat down. Did you have a child in your lap? Maybe you were talking to a friend or texting someone. Were you paying the bills or catching up on email? We can get a lot done when we sit down. In today’s Bible story, we read about what Mary did when she sat down. Read Luke 10:38-42.
Jesus had just stopped by for a visit. While her sister Martha was rushing around getting things ready, Mary made a different choice that day. She humbled herself and she opened her heart.
Sit Down
Mary chose to slow down. There were many things around the house to get done but Mary was concerned about the only thing worth being concerned about. She decided to not let the things of the world dictate what she should be doing. Mary chose to sit down.
Mary also humbled herself. Did you notice where Mary sat? At the feet of Jesus. This is a very humbling position. Mary declared that Jesus was her Lord and Savior. She made the statement to all around her that she was going to submit to Jesus.
In sitting down, Mary also opened her heart. Sitting at Jesus’ feet, she opted to listen intently. Desiring to be more like Jesus, Mary absorbed every word He spoke. I believe that as Mary listened she was looking deep into her own heart to see what she needed to change.
Choice
Like Mary, we have a choice each day. Will we let the long to-do lists, the project due at work, or even our kids distract us from the choice to be with Jesus? We need to make time to be with Jesus daily. Time at His feet.
What does this look like in our season of life though? How do we take the time to sit at the feet of Jesus when it’s not quiet and we don’t feel like we have the time? Or when we have scheduled the time in and then one of our kids throws up everywhere or wakes up from a bad dream?
Sitting at the Feet of Jesus
There are many ways we can sit at the feet of Jesus besides just having a quiet time. Here are 5 ways to sit at the feet of Jesus:
- Go to Church. Surround yourself with a community of believers who point you to Jesus.
- Meditate on one Scripture verse throughout the day
- Worship- listen to praise music that helps you focus on Jesus,
- Listen to the Bible or read it whenever you can. Stoplights, waiting for a train, car pick up line.
- Pray. Take time each day to pray and bring your requests to God. When you do this, you are in the presence of God.
When we take this time to sit at the feet of Jesus, we will be blessed. Not only will God overflow us with His peace and joy but we will learn how to be more like Jesus. When we open our hearts to Him and ask Jesus to change us, God always comes through. Will you join me in making a daily practice of sitting at the feet of Jesus?
Let's Pray
Dear Lord, this week was crazy. Almost too busy. As I look back now, I realize even more of my need to slow down. Jesus, I want to make it a priority to sit at Your feet and just listen. Please teach me to humble myself before You. I want to let go of all the distractions and focus on You alone Jesus. In Jesus name, Amen.
