What I Learned about Gratitude from 10 Lepers
Would you consider yourself a person of gratitude? Do you remember to say thank you when someone does something for you? I wish I could say I always remember to say thanks but I struggle with this. In today’s scripture from Luke 17:11-19, we read about ten lepers. They taught me about the importance of gratitude.
These ten lepers found out Jesus was coming. These lepers heard that Jesus could heal. As Jesus walked by, they called out in a loud voice. They asked Jesus to have pity on them. As lepers, they were separated from the community because they were declared unclean. But, that was about to change. Read the story below.
The Ten Lepers
On the way to Jerusalem, he was passing along between Samaria and Galilee. And as he entered a village, he was met by ten lepers, who stood at a distance and lifted up their voices, saying, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.” When he saw them he said to them, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went they were cleansed. Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice; and he fell on his face at Jesus' feet, giving him thanks. Now he was a Samaritan. Then Jesus answered, “Were not ten cleansed? Where are the nine? Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?” And he said to him, “Rise and go your way; your faith has made you well.” Luke 17:11-19
Immediately
Jesus immediately responded to the ten lepers. He told them to go show themselves to the priest. I love how Jesus asked the ten lepers to step out in faith. They weren’t healed yet but Jesus asked them to go anyway. And as they went, the ten lepers were healed.
Can you imagine how these men must have felt? They were completely healed from leprosy. The text does not tell us how long these men had leprosy but we know from the laws of the day that another human hasn’t touched these men for a long time. Now they will be declared clean and can hug their family again. What joy must have filled their hearts!
Did you forget?
As the story continues, we read that one man came back to Jesus to thank Him. This man knew the source of His healing and wanted to recognize what Jesus did. Jesus honored this man’s faith and responded “Rise and go; your faith has made you well.”
Every time I read this story, I wonder why the other nine lepers didn’t return to thank Jesus. I want to ask them “Did you forget to say thank you? Don’t you remember how you got healed?” I often wonder if they were just too excited to tell others that they forgot about Jesus. Or maybe they didn’t believe it themselves and needed more proof?
Gratitude
It's hard to know why these nine lepers didn’t thank Jesus. But, I have learned a lot from them and felt challenged. How often have I been exactly like those nine lepers? So many times I have prayed about something and it has been answered. And yet, I have not gone back to thank Jesus. I want this to change. I want my life to be one of gratitude even for the little things.
I am thankful for God’s love and grace to help me in this journey. God is so worthy of all my praise and gratefulness. I choose to live my life in a way that reflects this.
How about you friend? Have you thanked God lately for all He has done for you? Has God recently answered a prayer of yours? Do you need to go back and thank Him?
Let's Pray
Heavenly Father, You are so good! Thank You for caring about every detail of my life. Thank You for the healing that You bring into my life. I long to be more grateful. Please open my eyes and help me to see You more. May my first response always be one of praise. I love You, Lord. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
