8 Ways to Keep Your Body Active This Year
As we step into a new year, the desire to be active and prioritize our health and well-being is a common theme. One of the most impactful ways to achieve this is by incorporating regular physical activity into our daily routines.
Movement benefits our physical health and contributes to mental and emotional well-being. If you're looking for fresh and exciting ways to move your body this year, consider these eight options.
1. Walking
The first way to be active this year is to incorporate brisk walks into your daily routine. It's a simple yet effective way to stay active, boost cardiovascular health, and clear your mind. Walking is so much more effective than people realize. So get out there and walk for at least 20 minutes a day. You’ll be surprised at how good you feel.
2. Running or Jogging
Take your cardio to the next level by incorporating running or jogging. It's a fantastic way to increase stamina, improve cardiovascular fitness, and burn calories.
This activity may seem intimidating but I encourage you to give it a try. You don’t have to be super fast. Run for one minute, walk for a few minutes, and then jog again. Do whatever feels good to your body.
3. Biking
Whether it's a stationary bike or hitting the trails, biking is a low-impact exercise that strengthens the lower body muscles while providing an excellent cardiovascular workout.
It’s also a fun way to get a workout in and hang out with your family. One of my favorite family fun activities is going on a bike ride.
4. Swimming
Another way to be active this year is to dive into a full-body workout by going swimming. It's a low-impact exercise that enhances cardiovascular fitness, builds muscle strength, and improves flexibility.
This option is great during the summer but consider looking for an indoor pool to use during the winter months. Look for a YMCA, a college nearby, or even a school aquatic center that is open to the public.
5. Strength Training
Lift weights or use resistance bands to build muscle strength. Strength training not only tones your body but also boosts metabolism and supports overall functional fitness. I love strength training workouts! My favorite ones are with FASTer Way. Before I started FASTer Way, I used Fitness Blender workouts and HASfit workouts.
6. Dancing
Whether in a formal class or simply dancing around your living room, dancing is a fun way to elevate your heart rate, enhance coordination, and release stress.
Dancing is also a lot of fun to do as a family to stay active. When my kids were younger we did a lot of dance parties. One of my favorites was on Valentine's Day. Read about that dance party HERE.
7. Hiking
Head to the great outdoors and enjoy the benefits of hiking. It not only provides a cardiovascular workout but also allows you to connect with nature and reap the mental health benefits of being outdoors. Hiking is another great activity to do with your family or a friend. Look for hiking trails close by or consider traveling to explore more areas.
8. High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)
Another way to stay active is to incorporate bursts of intense exercise followed by short periods of rest. HIIT workouts are time-efficient. They are also effective for burning calories, improving cardiovascular health, and building endurance.
HIIT hasn’t always been my favorite type of workout but it is slowly growing on me. I love that FASTer Way incorporates HIIT workouts on Mondays and Tuesdays. I love that I am in and out in 30 minutes.
Be Active in 2024
Remember, the key to a sustainable and enjoyable fitness routine is finding activities you genuinely enjoy. Mix and match these options to stay active and keep your workouts interesting. Choose one way each week to do with your family. Make fitness a priority this year. It will impact your future.
