9 Encouraging Bible Verses to Help Beat the Winter Blues + A Yummy Soup Recipe!

It’s that time of year where the weather is cold, we don’t see much sun and we are often stuck inside. This is often the time of year people struggle with feeling down. The winter blues is a reality for so many.

One way that has been helpful for me when working through the winter blues is turning to the Scriptures. God’s word is filled with lots of promises, encouragement, and wisdom. Today, I am going to share 9 of those encouraging Bible verses to help beat the winter blues.

1. Isaiah 26:3

“You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!

When you take time to fix your thoughts on Jesus, your other thoughts take a backseat. If you’re like me, you may have to take a deep breath, trust and refocus on Jesus more than once throughout the day. Peace will come.

2. Deuteronomy 31:8

“Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord will personally go ahead of you. He will be with you; he will neither fail you nor abandon you.”

Whatever you are facing right now, I want to encourage you to take hold of this promise in a fresh way. God is here, He is ahead of you and God is holding you close. He will never leave you. You can walk in boldness and confidence today!

3. Philippians 4:8

“And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.”

Doubt. Fear. Worry. Judgment. These are all things we can fix our minds on. But, it is not life-giving in any way. It pulls us down further into the winter blues.

Instead, let’s fix our minds on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. How do we do that? Name the other thought out loud and ask Jesus to fill your mind with His truth.

Read God’s word and find scriptures that speak the truth. We will see and feel a difference in our attitude and mindsets. Guaranteed!

4. Psalm 3:3

“But you, O Lord, are a shield around me; you are my glory, the one who holds my head high.”

The winter blues are real and sometimes it is hard to just get up for the day. We would rather stay in bed and not face whatever is happening.

May I encourage you to think about getting out of bed in a different way? In this Scripture, God states that He is the one who holds our head high.

So even when we feel like we can’t face the day, let’s remember that the Creator of the Universes is personally involved in our lives. He is holding our head high.

God is also a shield around us. He is protecting us and caring for all our needs. The next time you feel like you can’t get out of bed, I encourage you to remember this Scripture verse. God is with you!

5. Psalm 28:7

“The Lord is my strength and shield. I trust him with all my heart. He helps me, and my heart is filled with joy. I burst out in songs of thanksgiving.”

There is so much truth packed into this scripture verse. God is your strength and shield. He helps you. God fills your heart with JOY even when you feel down. Grab hold of God’s hand and trust Him.

6. Isaiah 41:10

Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.”

I don’t know what worries you or causes you to fear. But, I do know this. God wants to help you. He wants to strengthen and help you.

God wants to remind you that you are not alone. Take a deep breath and rest in the arms of your Heavenly Daddy. God will not let you fall.

7. Isaiah 40:31

But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint.”

Do you feel weary? Are you ready to throw in the towel? If so, let this scripture verse wash over you. My prayer is that it goes down deep and takes root in your heart. In Jesus, you WILL find new strength.

8. Psalm 42:11

“Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise him again—my Savior and my God!”

I am not sure what you are facing right now, what keeps you up at night or what consumes your thoughts. But, I do know this. God knows what you are working through and He cares very deeply.

Put your hope in God no matter how helpless the situation feels. He is trustworthy and will sustain you.

9. Romans 15:13

“I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.”

The last verse I want to share today is one of my favorites. As you work through the winter blues, my prayer for you is this verse. May God, the source of YOUR hope, fill you COMPLETELY with JOY and PEACE as you trust in Him. Friend, you will OVERFLOW with confident hope because of the Holy Spirit.
